Skin and Body Care In Winters - Winter Skin Care

Most of us spend hours worrying about our silhouettes, yet we tend to neglect the texture of our skin, which also plays a vital part in the way we look. Dedicate just a few extra minutes to looking after your body at bath time, and you will be amazed atthe results.

Useful Tips on how to care your skin in winters

1. During the winter months your body spends most of its time swaddled in layers of clothing. You flit from freezing temperatures outside to centrally heated atmospheres inside without thinking of the havoc this wreaks on your system. Cell renewal slows down, and old, flaky skin cells accumulate, leading grey, lacklustre appearance. Exfoliate at least once a week, using either a long-handled loofah (which will help you reach those difficult parts, such as your back) or an exfoliating body scrub.

2. Bony areas, such as knees and elbows, need extra attention. Use a deeply moisturizing agent (such as petroleum jelly) to keep knees and elbows soft and young-looking.

3. Avoid very hot baths and showers - these can lead to broken capillaries. Cool baths and showers help boost the circulation and 'wake up' the skin, leaving you fresh and rejuvenated.'

4. Stand up and be counted. Bad posture means your body is out of alignment, and can never look its best. Hold your shoulders and neck back, keep your chin and eyes up and tilt your pelvis slightly towards the front. This simple corrective can add inches to your height, and make all the difference to your appearance.

5. Remember to slather any exposed areas of your body with sun protection at all times, even in midwinter. Sun exposure is the single most important factor in premature skin ageing.

6. Moisturize every time you have a bath. Dry skin wrinkles on your body just as it does on your face. Change the strength of your moisturizer according to the seasons - if you are on the beach, in the sand and in the sea, you will need more protection.

You should also include the following beneficial skin-pampering techniques:

  • Humidify. When the heat is on, replace lost indoor moisture by running a humidifier in the house.
  • Use steam rather than sauna. At the gym or spa, instead of the dry-and-drying-sauna, use the steam room. Before steaming, apply a thin layer of Vitamin E oil. Your skin will come out radiant and amazingly soft.
  • Pamper fingers and toes. Don’t forget these extremities, which take a particularly harsh beating in bitter climates. To bring them back to smoothness, soak feet and hands in warm water mixed with lemon juice and Vitamin E oil. Afterwards, rub on Aloe Ultra Moisture Cream.
  • Eat goods fats. Food like fish and flaxseed that are loaded with nutritious omega-3 fatty acids can revitalize skin.
  • Be gentle. Some say exfoliants (scrubs) are too harsh to use on already chapped skin but if you must use one, the gentler, the betterr.
  • Wear cotton. For clothing that goes next to your skin, avoid fabrics like wool; they abuse skin with friction and can dry it out.
  • Drink water frequently. Hydration from the inside, by drinking water is one of the most important things you can do for skin, say dermatologists, in cold weather as well as hot.
  • Protect. Don't forget that the sun puts out damaging rays even during the winter months, so use your daily sunscreen.
