What is Atypical Moles ?

Atypical Moles is a very common type of skin disorders but is very dangerous also. Most experts believe that atypical moles are at higher risk of turning into melanoma as compared to normal moles. People with many atypical moles should have a complete skin exam each year.

Melanocytes can form abnormal moles, also called atypical moles or dysplastic nevi.The tendency to develop atypical moles can run in families (inherited predisposition). Most moles -- both ordinary and atypical ones -- never become cancerous. Thus the removal of all atypical nevi is unnecessary. But when a pathologist looks at an atypical mole under the microscope, it has features that are in-between a normal mole and a melanoma.Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer which kills quickly if not removed in time.

What are the symptoms of Atypical Moles ?

Here are the list of some of the common symptoms of Atypical Moles :

1) Asymmetry. One half of mole doesn't match the other half.

2) Border irregularity. The edges are ragged, notched, or blurred of moles

3) Color. The pigmentation is not uniform. Shades of tan, brown, and black are present. Dashes of red, white, and blue add to the mottled appearance. Changes in color distribution, especially the spread of color from the edge of a mole into the surrounding skin, also are an indicator of early melanoma.

4) Diameter. The size of the mole is larger than 6 mm(0.2 in.), or about the size of a pencil eraser. Any growth of a mole should be of concern.

5) AMs may appear anywhere on the body, but they most frequently occur on the back, the chest, the buttocks, the breasts, and the scalp. Lesions can be found in sun-exposed and sun-protected areas.

What are the causes of Atypical Moles ?

The cause of the Atypical Moles is Exposing the skin to sunlight. Follwoing are the causes of Atypical Moles

  • The tendency to develop atypical moles is inherited (runs in families).
  • Exposing the skin to sunlight is thought to lead to the development of atypical moles.
  • There is a family history of melanoma
  • Numerous dysplastic nevi are present
  • The skin is light-colored and heavily freckled due to excessive sun exposure
  • AM may be inherited (FAMM syndrome) or appear sporadically.
  • Patients with FAMM syndrome are at an increased risk for the development of melanoma, although the individual risk is variable.

Treatment of Atypical Moles - With Home Remedies

  • The only safe way to remove an atypical mole is to have it cut out .
