What is Berloque Dermatitis ?

Berloque Dermatitis is a very common type of skin disorders but is very dangerous also. Berloque Dermatitis is a skin condition in which patients develop a brownish to reddish discoloration of the neck and sometimes the arms due to applying perfume or cologne to the skin.

Sometimes the skin first turns red before changing to a brownish color. This condition can persist for years or even be permanent. This is a type of photosensitization resulting in deep brown pigmentation on exposure to sunlight after application of bergamot oil and other essential oils in perfume. Allergic contact dermatitis to a plant is not contagious and the blister fluid does not spread the rash. The rash appears between four hours and 10 days after exposure to the plant, depending on individual sensitivity and the amount of contact.Many perfumes and colognes contain oil of bergamot, an extract of the peel of a specific orange grown in the South of France and the Calabria district of Italy. When this oil comes in contact with the skin and the skin is exposed to sunlight, the oil of bergamot causes the skin to discolor. With repeated exposures to sunlight, the discoloration becomes permanent.

What are the causes of Berloque Dermatitis ?

The cause of the Berloque Dermatitis are unknown yet some of the possible causes are as follows:

1) Bergapten, or 5-methoxypsoralen, is the photoactive component of bergamot oil from the bergamot lime ( C bergamia ), which is a popular ingredient in perfumes and fragrances and can cause Berloque Dermatitis.

2) Many perfumes and colognes contain oil of bergamot, an extract of the peel of a specific orange grown in the South of France and the Calabria district of Italy. When skin and this oil contacts and get exposed in sunlight the oil causes skin to discolor it can became permanent discolored if it is done regularily.
